Week 4 - activities

I started to begin this post with, “This was just a normal week…” But the truth is that no week is just a normal week during the program, even if we do the normally scheduled classes and activities.

Take Tuesday. We weren’t scheduled for the gymnasium, so we went to the lawn area near the Chateau de Brest. One group was going to do badminton and another pétanque, the French ball throwing game.

Badminton was pretty funny. First, it took about 20 minutes to figure out how to det up the net. Then it just so happened that the orientation of the net meant that one side not only had the wind against it, but the sun in their eyes. No one wanted to go to the effort to rearrange the net.

So, Aaron’s team suffered. Numerous times, Aaron hit the birdie into the air, and it came down behind him. Other times, he was about to hit a good shot, but was blinded by the sun. He got so frustrated, it became funny.

It’s not nice to laugh at another’s misfortune. But it was really funny.

When I went back to check on the pétanque players some 100 meters away, pétanque did not seem to be happening. The students preparing for the dance performance for the family show were practicing. Other students were doing things that didn’t really seem to be sports activities.

A rising tide carries all boats, as a slacking tide leaves all boats. I think we had a slacking tide happening.

Look at Alisa go! She's found her sport.

Nathan makes an incredible dive!

Please note the position of Aaron's raquette and the location
of the birdie.

Tara is all that and more!

Mason makes a move.

Nathan didn't "lose it in the sun."

Someone is more worried about her hair than the game.

"Le soleil, le soleil!"

This is not pétanque.

And this certainly isn't pétanque.

I don't think this is pétanque either.

This isn't pétanque, but it would be my choice.

Pétanque, qu'est-ce que c'est?

Ce n'est pas un sport, sans doute.
